It is obvious is one of the biggest causes of misunderstanding between humans, between humans and IT, and now between humans and AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI is only as good as it is briefed<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some people joke that AI stands for almost intelligent. I turn it around: AI is an intelligent colleague, and an intelligent colleague is only as good as my briefing. I have worked with a real assistant for 16 years. Whenever something comes back that I am not happy with, my first question is whether I briefed him properly - and in eight out of ten cases I did not. In the remaining cases the question is whether I gave him everything he needed: the right software, samples, context, training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prompting is a leadership task<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why I find the word prompting slightly too small. Prompts can now be rewritten by the systems themselves. The real question is how you lead an AI. Having led teams for many years, I see the parallels everywhere - and, incidentally, with raising children. Anyone who has ever been a child knows how it feels to be told what to do without being told why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why generic prompts produce generic results<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of us throw in a single sentence and are then surprised that something generic comes back. If I only say write me an article, I would not say that to a person either. A smart colleague would ask: how do you want it, for which audience? You can ask employees to come back with questions, and you can do the same with AI: in the custom instructions, tell the system to ask you when a request is unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why we brief machines worse than people<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Habit. For twenty years we have thrown keywords at a search engine, because search engines were built for keywords. You typed a question, got three million results, saw paid entries at the top and well-optimised ones below, and never scrolled further. There is a joke that the safest place to hide a password on the internet is page two of the search results. That habit now meets a system that would happily take a full briefing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The first answer is only the rough draft<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most people accept the first answer. That is where it gets interesting, not where it ends. The second, third and fourth iteration inside the same chat is where quality appears: shorter, more concrete, in the right tone. And because everyone prompts differently, very few companies build a shared prompt library - which is a missed opportunity, since most systems let you save a prompt and share it with a team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The six building blocks of a good briefing<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Role.<\/strong> You are an experienced sales director in mechanical engineering. This activates both knowledge and behaviour, and you can combine roles: the combination of Albert Einstein and a childrens television presenter gives you expertise plus the ability to explain it simply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Context.<\/strong> The company, the audience, the occasion, the constraints. <strong>Task.<\/strong> What is the goal - an appointment next week, a follow-up email, a blog post? Paint the windows or paint the frames? <strong>Format.<\/strong> How many words, formal or informal, bullet points or prose, no filler phrases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Examples.<\/strong> This is the strongest single lever. If you want a particular style, hand over articles you wrote yourself and say: write like this, or analyse this style first. <strong>Iteration.<\/strong> Sharpen in the same chat. Shorter, warmer, more concrete - never accept the first draft as final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Three tools, three strengths<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Copilot has the context advantage: with Microsoft 365 it reaches your mail, your Teams conversations and your files directly. Claude is strong on long documents, structure and thorough text work, and increasingly on doing practical work end to end. ChatGPT is the all-rounder, originally built for consumers, and you can make it considerably sharper with custom GPTs.
