The bottleneck is the human being, and the bottleneck is leadership. Nowhere is that more visible than with artificial intelligence, where we deal with a serious amount of change, uncertainty and juggling many balls at once. So I invited someone who juggles better than anyone I know, and who also does things most of us would consider slightly insane: Martin Mall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From diabolo to freefall: who is Martin Mall?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martin Mall is one of the finest stage speakers I know. He juggles five balls when he has to, but his signature prop is the diabolo, a Chinese juggling device roughly 4,000 years old that has accompanied him on stage for more than 25 years. What began as an artistic career is now a way of turning content and messages into movement. His second passion is skydiving. A pilot friend of mine calls jumping out of a working aircraft a peculiar hobby. Professionals simply call it skydiving, and both disciplines require the same thing: courage and a working relationship with uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What leaders can learn from freefall<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask most people to imagine stepping out of a functioning aircraft and you have described their worst nightmare. Ask an active skydiver and their eyes light up: the door opens and you go. Same situation, opposite reading. That is the first lesson about uncertainty, and it applies equally when a manager opens the office door on a difficult Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The honest question is not whether the situation is risky, but whether you are equipped for this kind of uncertainty. Do you have the right gear? The right training? The right mindset? And does the team around you function? Skydivers are not tired of life. They are the opposite, and that is exactly why they are meticulous. Incidentally, a lot of everyday language about this sport is decades out of date. People still talk about pulling the ripcord. Ripcords do not exist in modern skydiving. It is a technique from the 1970s, and using the phrase mostly signals that you have never been near the sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The record jump: an 80 in the sky over North Rhine-Westphalia<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the 80th anniversary of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Martin was asked to organise a jump in which skydivers form the number 80 in freefall. What you see in the video looks effortless and highly coordinated. The reality behind it was two days of bad weather in the middle of June: strong wind, low clouds, and a European crew standing on the ground unable to try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The jump you see was the only attempt of the weekend. A weather window opened roughly half an hour before the project would have been abandoned. At that point there is no second run, no rehearsal and no room for improvisation. It has to work. That is the moment where equipment, training, mindset and team either pay off or do not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why diverse teams win in large formations<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The jumpers on that project were experienced, but experience is not the same as age. Someone in their thirties doing a thousand jumps a year may well match someone in their fifties with two hundred a year. What matters far more is the mix. For jumps where everything counts, a deliberately diverse team works best: different levels of experience, different perspectives, different routines. That mixture is what tells you this is the right crew for the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It scales, too. From 26 jumpers forming the 80, the same principles carry to formations of just over 100 people on a world record attempt, and further still to 214 people leaving ten aircraft at 6,000 metres and finding each other in the same short window of freefall. The interesting question is never whether it is spectacular. It is how you get a team to that level of performance in so little time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The wind tunnel: making uncertainty tangible for teams<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not everyone wants to jump out of an aircraft, and you do not have to. The physical sensation of freefall, the feeling of flying yourself, can be simulated in a vertical wind tunnel: a column of air from below carries you. Martin uses it with smaller teams who have seen the talk and then ask the obvious question - can I try that myself?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happens there is remarkable. People who said they would never do this are flying safely with an instructor within a minute. After a few seconds you can watch it click. How often do adults genuinely learn a completely new physical skill? It takes minutes, it sticks, and above all it is an experience the whole team shares. I can confirm this from my own family: when our daughter asked for exactly this as a confirmation present, all three of us flew, and we still talk about it today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion: navigating in uncertain times<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to move people inside a company, you rarely move them with facts. You move them with emotion. As a leader you cannot choose whether the wind comes from above, below or the side, and you cannot order better weather. What you can do is navigate your team through it - which is precisely the skill both disciplines teach. The bottleneck is not the technology. The bottleneck is the human being.
